The photographic imagery of Tairrie B. Murphy

We are pleased to feature the  crushing and atmospheric photographic imagery of Tairrie  B. Murphy.

Best known as the  fierce, enigmatic siren fronting the hardcore band My Ruin, Murphy is a woman with a long and surprisingly varied career.  Through all her many incarnations, she has always remained true to her ethics and aesthetics.  She is equal parts sharp tongue and enormous heart, and she’s never afraid to speak her mind.  As a rock and rap artist, she delivers gorgeous verses heavily imbued with a poignant, raw subtext that’s always somewhat uncomfortably in-your-face! No matter what her milieu, she remains true to her course, and that makes  Tairrie B. one of our favorite artists.

After My Ruin’s last headline tour of the UK, Tairrie announced that she was taking a break from playing heavy rock to conjure some heavy magic and begin working on her first book, a memoir about her early days signed to Eazy-E of NWA’s Comptown Records label in 1990. This led her to revisit her hip-hop roots, not just with her writing, but with her voice as well. In 2015, Tairrie recorded her first rap album in over 25 years, which she co-produced with husband/ guitarist  Mick Murphy (My Ruin, Chevy Metal, Teenage Time Killers), and stunned the metal world.

We will be talking at length with  Tairrie about her new album “Vintage Curses” and her journey from rap to rock, and back again, very soon.

In the meantime, Tairrie has been pursuing another artistic endeavor -her love of photography. Armed with camera and lens as the newest ammunition in her artistic arsenal, Tairrie B. Murphy explores her love of black and white photography, and like everything  else she touches,  her rich imagery shows an obvious passion.

Tairrie B. recently shared a post on Facebook talking about her photography. The following are her words, and some of her striking photos.

Since my early days as a rapper into forming my first band Manhole and throughout my various musical endeavors, I have documented my life on and off tour, designed album artwork & merch, conceptualized and edited other people’s photos (with permission) and collaborated on all of my videos, many of which I directed & co-edited. It’s been a wonderful learning experience and I am grateful to all those who encouraged me to pursue my artistic passions along the way.

As most of you know, I have always had a bit of a fascination with the somber beauty of black & white imagery from the sky above to the city below. After working with so many amazing photographers over the years, I have found myself more and more drawn to being behind the lens. Back in the day, I used to shoot analog with my first Canon 35mm camera and have recently uncovered many never before seen photos in my vault along with two hundred rolls of film I shot of bands & musicians live which have remained untouched and waiting to be developed. It’s exciting to think what I am going to find and a little scary!

I recently got a new digital Canon which has re-ignited my fire and inspired me to rediscover my love for the art of photography while slowly working on my first book and writing for my new album.

I have created a new public pageTairrie B. Photography which will accompany my new music page Tairrie B. to showcase more of my work for those of you interested in checking it out. I look forward to sharing my photos from the past to present day with you and thank you again for your continued support. ♡
