Austin Shaw

Austin Shaw album review

Austin Shaw
Release Date September 15, 2017

Austin Shaw’s debut full-length album, FELT, sounds like it’s very much rooted in 70s folk, rock and pop music with its own original soulful melodies. It’s no wonder given the Santa Cruz based songwriter, guitar player, singer and producer grew up listening to artists like James Taylor, Elton John, Neil Diamond and Neil Young. A bit of blues elements with some tasty bottleneck guitar licks is interspersed throughout the LP giving even the serene arrangements a welcome jolt of rawness and edginess. The emotional and passionate material mines very personal themes rooted in love, loss, longing, and self-discovery. Though the vocal delivery comes across as very easy going, smooth, mellow and warm ala Bread, there is a tension and deep introspection below the surface that reveals itself upon repeated listens. The complex layers of intricate songwriting craft shine through as one immerses themselves in the material connecting to the universal audio snapshots of Shaw’s life experiences.  Produced by Robert Smith (Defy Records), the solid album also features performances by guitarist Larry Saltzman (Paul Simon), drummer Joe Bonadio (Sting), bassist Malcolm Gold and vocalist Clara Lofaro. FELT is set for release in September.
