Pussy Riot Launch Kickstarter Campaign for Immersive Political Play, ‘Inside Pussy Riot’

In an exciting collaboration between Nadya Tolokonnikova and the London-based theater company, Les Enfants Terribles, the punk rock collective, Pussy Riot, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a progressive theatrical project. This immersive political play, titled “Inside Pussy Riot,” hopes to raise ¬£60,000 by August 18th. Incentives for backers include personalized postcards to Vladimir Putin, Pussy Riot merch, tickets to the performances, and more.

Nadya, a central figure of Pussy Riot, was one of two members imprisoned for 22 months after an impromptu performance of a “Punk Hymn” inside of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, in Moscow, Russia. The 2012 performance included lyrics denouncing Russian President, Vladimir Putin, criticized the Russian Orthodox Church and asserted feminist ideas. “Inside Pussy Riot” will follow the events leading up to Nadya’s arrest.

Nadya and Les Enfants plan to premiere the play — which will have a limited 6-week run — sometime in November 2017. ¬†Performances will only take place in London. Nadya will take part in a select number of these performances, including the premiere.

Les Enfants Terribles are know for their complex staging. Their most recent project, Alice’s Adventures Underground, features elaborate sets and costumes which pull the audience straight into a gritty fantasy world. It is these elements Nadya wishes to bring to Pussy Riot’s story; however, instead of fantasy, the play will throw the audience into a realistic portrayal of the Russian prison system.

“This wild, immersive theatrical experience will allow the audience to become a participant, experiencing exactly what Pussy Riot went through during our imprisonment – from the original Church performance, to the court trial and prison cells,” Nadya explained, “We’re going to recreate Russian courtrooms, a real Russian labor colony, solitary confinement cells, priests who shout about banning abortions and many more absurd, but real-life things that exist in Russia today.”

While this particular project will focus on policies in Russia, Pussy Riot continue to be globally relevant in today’s political climate, and they aim to protect freedom all around the world. Indeed, in response to the U.S. presidential race, Nadya released a song and video about the Trump campaign, which can be watched below. Pussy Riot is adamant against the policies of Trump and Putin, along with ideologies concerning oligarchy and dictatorship.

tHeARTofla will be covering Pussy Riot and their political motivations in depth in our upcoming quarterly print publication, which will be released this October.
