Arroyo Seco Weekend Preview Promises ‘Multigenerational’ Appeal with Picnic Vibes

Last week, Goldenvoice held a preview event for the upcoming Arroyo Seco Weekend festival. Presenters provided sneak peeks about what to expect at the event, including food and beverage samples. The festival, which takes place on June 24th and 25th, will be located at the Rose Bowl grounds, on the rolling greens of the Brookside Golf Course.

Arroyo Seco promises a fun-filled weekend which will feature local, organic fare, art, popup libraries and three stages for musical performances. Headliners include big names such as Tom Petty, Alabama Shakes, Mumford & Sons, Weezer, The Shins, and Andrew Bird.

This will be first annual Arroyo Seco Weekend; however, the festival has been years in the making. Four years ago, Festival Director, Nic Adler, and Goldenvoice President, Paul Tollett, came up with the idea for the festival while relaxing in the Arroyo Seco. Tailgating with beers and admiring the scenery of the park, both men agreed that the serene location would be an excellent place for a music festival. What followed was three years of planning and meetings with all walks of the Pasadena community — from city planners, to the old lady next door. Goldenvoice is now set with a 10-year contract with the Rose Bowl, which is celebrating its 95th year.

The main focus of Arroyo Seco Weekend is to work closely with the Pasadena community to provide a festival which can showcase the culture, art, and food of the city. Popup libraries at the fest will provide books about Pasadena’s history, landscaping, architecture, and culture, while art by Pasadena locals will be featured throughout. In addition, 30% of the food vendors will be Pasadena restaurants.

Festival organizers promise a laid back atmosphere, much different from Goldenvoice’s larger festivals like Coachella. This pacing is in part due to the location of the event — which is surrounded by family neighborhoods — and will have more of a picnic vibe. Indeed, along with gourmet restaurant venders, Arroyo Seco Weekend will be providing a picnic basket service. The baskets are curated by professional chefs, and can be reserved online prior to the event.

Adler is promoting Arroyo Seco Weekend as a “multigenerational” event, which community members of all ages can enjoy. The Rose Bowl’s Kidspace Children’s Museum have organized activities for parents and kids to enjoy together such as DIY instrument building and themed photo opportunities.

Adler’s vision is a relaxed festival experience, stating that he wanted attendees to be able to, “sit down, put a blanket down, have your family run around, with your favorite bands playing…You’ve got your friends and your drink in hand.”

This is only year one of the festival, and it is expecting to grow. Adler added that Goldenvoice will continue to work with the city of Pasadena to improve and provide the best festival experience possible.

Switchfoot is set to host the 13th annual BRO-AM Festival this June. The beach-side fest takes place in Encinitas, North County San Diego, and will also include performances by Lifehouse and Jamtown. This unique festival will also host surf contests for competitors of all ages and abilities.

From the Press Release:

June 1, 2017 – San Diego, CA – SWITCHFOOT will be hosting their 13th annual BRO-AM, presented by Hurley and iHeartMedia, on Saturday, June 24th, 2017 at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, CA. The day will be full of unique surf contests and a beach fest concert with performances from Switchfoot, Lifehouse, Jamtown, the 91X Battle of the Bands Winner and a very special appearance by the VH1 Save The Music Foundation Youth Choir.  Numerous vendors and partners help put on this event including Suja Juice, BMW Encinitas, LaCie and ViaSat.

As this is an epic beach event, there will be many different surf events including the More ‘BRO’ than Pro Team Surf Contest, where a four person team competes riding one wave regular and one wave switch, the Rob Machado Bro Junior Surf Contest, which is all about who has the most fun on their board, the Challenged Athletes Foundation Kids’ Surf Contest, giving an opportunity for kids with physical challenges to compete, and the always hilarious Surf Joust Expression Session, complete with battle armor and nerf weapons upon soft surfboards. Members of Switchfoot will even be surfing in the team contest with Rob Machado! For full details and rules surrounding the competitions and more information on the 2017 BRO-AM, please visit www.broam.org.

In support of this massive celebration, the Arts Program at San Diego International Airport has partnered with SWITCHFOOT to create an exhibition highlighting BRO-AM, the band and the impact that such community partnerships have on the San Diego region.

The exhibition is located at the airport in Terminal 2 near Gate 36 and will be on display through September for travelers past security checkpoints. Special collaborative music and dance concerts will also be presented atthe airport by BRO-AM partner youth organizations on June 15th and 19th, including performances from Escondido-based A Step Beyond (6/15), VH1 Save The Music Foundation/San Diego Youth Symphony & Conservatory students from Chula Vista (6/19), and a special pop-up performance from SWITCHFOOT (6/19). Proceeds from the 2017 BRO-AM events support local youth initiatives with selected 501(c)(3) organizations, including A Step Beyond, Challenged Athletes Foundation, Feeding San Diego, Rob Machado Foundation, StandUp For Kids and VH1 Save The Music Foundation.

In 2005, after traveling the world, SWITCHFOOT dreamed up an idea to give back to their hometown that supported them as both surfers and musicians, to rally their great community and to invest in kids who might need a hand up. Thirteen years later, the BRO-AM has grown in impact and size gathering over 17,000 people to the beach for a ‘more bro than pro’ team surf contest, Rob Machado Bro Junior surf contest, free beach concert and numerous vendor booths. The BRO-AM Foundation focuses on initiatives in two areas that create a thriving future – Physical and community well being along with opportunity and empowerment through music, art, surfing and education.

Beyond their career achievements and creation of BRO-AM, SWITCHFOOT has also maintained a deep commitment to a variety of humanitarian causes, lending their support to such worthy organizations as CURE International, DATA, the ONE Campaign, Habitat for Humanity, Invisible Children, and To Write Love on Her Arms”

High and Low Festival to Takeover Southern California

Introducing High and Low Festival, a full day concert experience with multiple stages that is confirmed to take place at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, CA on Saturday, September 9th, 2017. The festival, which is presented by KROQ, includes headliner Brand New, Death Cab For Cutie, Tegan and Sara and more. In addition to music, The Hard Times will be curating a comedy area that will feature popular and emerging comics.
High and Low Festival comes from the mind of Andy Serrao, producer of many successful Southern California festivals and owner of Chain Reaction. A reflection of both Serrao’s personal listening tastes and the very nature of music, he says the festival’s name has multiple meanings. “Sonically, music has highs and lows, and emotional highs and lows, and with the California topography, we have the mountains, the desert and the ocean,” says Serrao. “The name High & Low fit for us, with the vision for where we wanted to go. Great music has got me through every aspect of my life. With every high and every low, came a soundtrack in my head that defined my life. This festival is a good representation of artists that do this for myself, and tons of other people.”
High and Low concertgoers can expect a festival with a coherent, cohesive identity, crafted by someone who truly understands what makes a live performance great.
General admission and VIP tickets for the festival will go on sale Friday, May 26th.
