Although these three live in different states, have extremely different backgrounds and current careers, they all have found a home in their respective Emo Nites that have become a mainstay in cities like Portland, Baltimore, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix and of course, Los Angeles. Brittany spoke to why Emo Nite was important to her, sharing “The music comes on, and everyone is equal.” The documentary and exclusive interview with the Director are available here.

Emo Nite LA is an event started by three friends (Babs Szabo, T.J. Petracca and Morgan Freed) that brings together people who share the love of emo rock music from the 90’s, 2000’s, and today. Different notable artists and musicians from all genres that have been inspired by emo and pop punk music have either DJ’d or performed at the events. Emo Nite has been featured in outlets like MTV, Teen Vogue, Consequence of Sound, Forbes, Rolling Stone, The New Yorker, LA Times, Billboard, LA Weekly, Time Out LA, Alternative Press, FUSE, HelloGiggles KERRANG! and talked about on the Grammy’s Red Carpet.

These events continue to be a home for fans, musicians, actors and everyone in between. The environment created by Babs, T.J. and Morgan provides a space for anyone that has been impacted
and influenced by Emo music to come together and celebrate that commonality.

Tickets start at $64.50, plus applicable service charges. Shrine is located at 665 W. Jefferson Blvd.

The Used’s 7th Studio Album
The Canyon
Available Now on Hopeless Records

The Used released the official music video for “Rise Up Lights” off The Canyon on Friday. The visuals pair perfectly with the track that Alternative Press called an “avant-garde dystopian anthem.” The song picks up right away with singer Bert McCracken’s iconic vocals and guitarist Justin Shekoski’s super charged guitar hitting you right in the face.

Last week, Rolling Stone released an intimate acoustic video session, which you can also watch below. The band performed their hit track, “On My Own” from their 2002 Self Titled release, and from The Canyon, “Over and Over Again” and “For You.” Rolling Stone shared that “McCracken delivered a remarkable vocal performance in which he jumped from a soft croon to a ragged wail.”

Last week, the band released their 7th studio album, The Canyon, via Hopeless Records. Written out of pain and loss, The Canyon is tragic and haunting while also having a sense of light and energy that is unlike anything this band has put forward. “This isn’t just an album born from a death, it’s an album whose makers have found some new lease on life,” shared Nylon in an exclusive interview and acoustic session with the band.

Produced by Ross Robinson (The Cure, At The Drive In), this 17-track album was recorded entirely on tape, with no more than 3 takes being used on each song. On the new record, Billboard shared “It’s their largest body of work to date, and in many ways, their most important.” Fans can purchase the album now in stores, on Apple Music, iTunes or streaming on Spotify.

The Used are currently on the road with support from Glassjaw.

Written out of pain and loss, The Canyon is tragic and haunting while also having a sense of light and energy that is unlike anything this band has put forward. While keeping the heavy hitting melodies and gut-wrenching lyrics that The Used is known for, this is the most visceral and personal piece of art the band has ever released.

Over the last 15 years, The Used have released a collection of albums that have shaped the space of the alternative rock scene. High energy live shows, gut-wrenching relatable lyrics, and melodies that blended pop sensibility and hard rock creating the perfect combination to make an everlasting impression on fans globally. The Used Announce Upcoming Album ‘The Canyon’

The Canyon
To Be Released October 27th

New Song and Music Video for
“Over and Over Again”

The Used have announced they will be releasing their seventh studio album titled, The Canyon due out October 27th on Hopeless Records. Produced by Ross Robinson (The Cure, At The Drive In), the 17-track album is the most raw, unadulterated and personal piece of art the band has ever released.

The Canyon will take fans on a lyrical journey through the intimate psyche of Bert McCracken. The intricate musical composition displayed presented itself to the band in a way it never has before.

Watch the music video for “Over and Over Again” below:

“I’ve learned as an artist that a great idea is such a gift. If I don’t stop whatever it is I’m doing, even if while driving, if I don’t pull over at that moment, then maybe I didn’t deserve the idea to begin with. I learned to respect and worship the ideas in that way, that they are and will always be something sacred. Stopping in that moment was a brand new approach for us during this process” says McCracken.

Every musical note and vocal heard on the record was recorded entirely on tape without a click track at the legendary Valentine Studio with some songs featuring string arrangements and a choir. The process was unique and unlike anything the band has done before. They would hit record and play it as if they were on stage, without a backing track. Songs weren’t played and recorded repeatedly until the magic was gone. What you are hearing is what really took place within the recording process. Every nuance was captured and with every listen you experience something new.

Over the last 15 years The Used have released a collection of albums that have shaped the space of the alternative rock scene. High energy live shows, gut wrenching relatable lyrics, and melodies that blended pop sensibility and hard rock creating the perfect combination to make an everlasting impression on fans globally. The band put everything into writing and recording The Canyon and from start to finish you are submerged into an inescapable visceral universe and McCracken leaves us with, “That’s what this record is – it’s a moment of silence for what’s real.”

Taste of Chaos – The San Manuel Amphitheater Fairgrounds

Taste of Chaos
The San Manuel Amphitheater Fairgrounds
San Bernardino
Saturday, October 3, 2015

Tucked in the hillside of San Bernardino at what was previously Glen Helen was a nonstop day of amplified emotional wreckage. The heavy heat of the day didn’t stop throngs of people from coming out to hear some of their favorites of the alternative/punk-pop scene era. The Taste of Chaos rotating stage kept the music going without a pause, as act after act took turns delivering their best to the excited crowd. This genre has been around for a while now, but it still has many loyal fans. Most of the bands were noticeably moved by this fact and spoke of it on stage.

Like a ‘Warped Tour Lite’, the line-up hosted many bands who have shared the stage together before. Dashboard Confessionals, Finch, Glassjaw, The Movielife and Saves the Day were just a few of the many bands that made the day seem like a nice bit of déjà vu. The fairgrounds filled with bodies was washed over with anthems of loss and misspent youth saturated in a high dose of nostalgia from the bands and audiences alike.

For the most part it was an exceptional day of music. The only questionable segment of the day was the DJ set by Blink 182’s Mark Hoppus. Now, when Hoppus says he wants to perform a DJ set any promoter would of course say yes, but in this particular setting it was kind of a FAIL. The set included several moments of Blink 182 songs merged with some slightly newer power-punk/emo like Panic at the Disco. Hoppus threw in tracks like Jay-Z’s “99 Problems”, “Do You Wanna Build a Snowman” from Frozen, “Turn Down for What?” and some ‘countrified’ hoedown cover of a Blink 182 song. Even though the crowd made the most of it singing and dancing along, many looked at it as a break.

As the sun subsided and the heat broke the intensity level went sky high. Multiple fairground dramas played out; the usual scraps between audience members, panicked participants crushed under the weight of the fans, puking, fighting, and losing belongings including prescription glasses (seen crushed on the ground).

The feel-good band of the day was undoubtedly Jimmy Eat World. They had the audience in the palm of their hands with recognizable songs like “Bleed American” and “The Authority Song”, ending with “Sweetness” and “The Middle” had the fairground area in unison as their personal choir.

Thrice and the headlining band The Used brought the real ‘chaos’ of the day, setting the stage and the fans on fire. With searing dynamic songs like “Under a Killing Moon” and the soul-draining “Firebreather”, Thrice brought the audience to a boil. The Used then brought the close of the night to a new level as singer Bert McCracken fronted the band decked out as one of Anthony Burgess’s Droogs from “A Clockwork Orange” while singing songs like the psychotic circus-like “The Bird and The Worm”, and the raw and volatile “Blood on My Hands”. Needless to say, the tightly-packed crowd was singing along to every song.
